The Solano Storm Under 12 girls traveled to Redding to compete in the Border Bash Invitational against two teams from Oregon. The Storm came out on top in their first game with goals by Stephanie Ndama, Lyndall Franklin, Paola Ibarra and Alexis White. The shutout in goal was posted by Caitlyn Sylva with the help of defenders Michelle Pittner, Kylie Webster, Taylor Schubert and Talia Pierson.

Solano Storm – 5
Southern Oregon Soccer Academy Red Hots – 1

In the second game of the day for the Storm Stephanie Ndama and Paola Ibarra each had two goals and Kimberly Avina added a fifth. A lack of concentration allowed a shot by the Red Hots that hit the post and spun back into the goal. Rylee McNeill used the width of the large field to her advantage in attacking from the left flank. The midfield was controlled by Alyssa Heffernan in the first half who stepped in as goalkeeper for the second half.

FAIRFIELD — Maybe Katie Knopp will get to play a complete season her senior year. That’s one of her goals for 2010, anyway.

As it is, the former Solano Community College soccer star and junior college All-America selection had to sit out part of her 2009 season at San Jose State University. She also redshirted her second year at Solano with a broken collarbone, and sat out several matches last year after re-breaking it.

A junior now, Knopp missed almost three weeks late in the 2009 season because of illness, but that didn’t stop the backup forward from helping the team with a pair of goals as the Spartans had their best season ever, winning the Western Athletic Conference regular season championship.

Knopp said the differences between junior college and NCAA Division I competition were apparent right away. “The pace of play is a lot faster,” she said. “Like my coach says, you have to be spot-on with everything you do.”

Ultimately, the change was more than she expected and it took some getting used to.

“Probably the biggest adjustment was dealing with the early-morning practices in the spring,” she said. “And with all the traveling we did, it’s hard to keep up with your schoolwork.”

Still, Knopp credits the team’s senior leadership for taking charge and getting the team on the right track after a bumpy 0-4 start. “They set the example for everyone and everyone else stepped up,” she said. She said the team finally started gelling on a two-match road trip to Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania.

While on the East Coast, the Spartans put together routs of Howard and Lafayette to start a 14-match unbeaten streak that carried the team into the final game of the regular season.

“It was fun getting to travel a lot,” Knopp said of her first Division I season. As for her final season of eligibility, Knopp said she hopes to play the whole year for the first time since her freshman season at Solano when she scored 25 goals for the Falcons. “We’re hoping to be as successful,” she said. “We have to come in working hard out of the (winter) break. Last year our spring set up our whole season.”

FAIRFIELD — The smorgasbord of activities at the Matt Garcia Youth Center has one more offering: Soccer.

Well, not exactly soccer but rather futsal, a soccer variation played on a hard indoor surface — in this case, the basketball court. The futsal program launched Saturday and continues every Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.

“One of the gaps we had was soccer because we know there are lots of kids that want to play it,” said Heather Sanderson, a recreation program coordinator working at the center.

Futsal is an indoor version of soccer played between teams of five. Unlike other forms of indoor soccer, futsal doesn’t make use of wall or boards in the area of play, instead relying on out-of-bounds lines like traditional soccer.

It is fun, simple to learn and will allow soccer enthusiasts to stay active year-round, said Tony Garcia, one of the volunteers and head coach of the Solano Titans, an under-16 boys team.

“We know futsal has taken off in a lot of communities so we expect that to happen here, too,” Garcia said.

The funding comes from a 2009 fundraiser put on by local police officers and the staffing comes from the Solano Soccer Club, which is supplying about eight coaches on a volunteer basis.

The availability of volunteer coaches was critical because the center only has a $6,000 budget for the program, Sanderson said.
“We got a little heartburn when we crunched the numbers,” she said. “(That $6,000) goes a long way but . . . if we wanted to run a program every Saturday, we couldn’t afford the staffing.”

The money will instead be spent on equipment and potentially establishing a traveling team, Sanderson said. Staff from Just4Kicks, which conducts instructional soccer classes, would oversee the team. Regular attendance isn’t necessary to participate in the futsal program, Sanderson said. The goal is to offer casual pick-up games to as many kids as possible, she said.

“If they come every Saturday we will be happy to see them, if they come every other Saturday we will be happy to see them and if they just drop in every once in a while we will be happy to see them,” she said.

The Fairfield Police Activities League program at the Matt Garcia Youth Center is open to local active junior high and high school students. The center is open from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday; 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 3 to 10:30 p.m. Friday. Membership costs $10 a year and can be completed at City Hall at the Mall. For more information, call 422-6288.
